Seventh Grade Bridge Project
7th grade math classes all designed and built toothpick bridges. Completed bridges were tested to determine the ratio of the weight they could hold just prior to breaking to their own weight. Many of our bridges held in excess of 200 times their own weight and a few held nearly 400 times their own weight. While classes are now delving into their respective math texts, students have been challenged to design and build a bridge that holds 1000 times its own weight. A prize will be awarded to the first builder of such a structure!

Soup Kitchen
On Tuesdays, Village School sixth and seventh graders serve their downtown neighbors at “Loaves and Fishes,” a soup kitchen at Christ Episcopal Church. Village School students have participated in this ministry for fifteen years.
Village School eighth graders make sandwiches each week for the Thursday soup kitchen at Holy Comforter Catholic Church. One Thursday a month, eighth graders serve lunch at the church.

Drama Teacher Makes News
Recently, in the C-ville Weekly our drama teacher Cindy Leal was featured in the Open Studio section. Cindy is new to Village School this year, but has already made a big impression on the girls. In addition to teaching drama, Cindy is also running a popular Improv club on Tuesdays.

Music Classes
Every Friday morning, the girls have either orchestra, woodwind choir, or chorus. These music classes expose the girls to a wide variety of musical styles and give them the opportunity to work together on a long-range, team goal: the school concert.

8th Grade Bridge Building Project
In much the same way that Greg Mortenson built a bridge at the outset of Three Cups of Tea, Village School 8th graders are designing and building a bridge for the Rivanna Trail Foundation’s system of hiking paths that surround Charlottesville. Our bridge will be located off of Brandywine Drive. It will cross a small stream (complete with a “gorge”). During our first week of school the 8th grade visited the building site to get a feel for the setting. We also hiked to take a look at a large arched bridge about one mile from our location. Presently all 8th grade math classes are designing prospective bridges. During the week of September 14th, students will build scale models of their designs. Then the class will be challenged to select one design to build at our site. Bridge plans and models will be on display at school for all to view.

Clubs at Village School
Every Tuesday, the girls spend lunch participating in one of nine clubs. Each quarter the students get to choose a new club to be a part of. For the first quarter, the offerings are Arts and Crafts, Improv, Photography, Bluegrass, Sports, Gardening, Cooking, Spy, and Movie Club.
