In much the same way that Greg Mortenson built a bridge at the outset of Three Cups of Tea, Village School 8th graders are designing and building a bridge for the Rivanna Trail Foundation’s system of hiking paths that surround Charlottesville. Our bridge will be located off of Brandywine Drive. It will cross a small stream (complete with a “gorge”). During our first week of school the 8th grade visited the building site to get a feel for the setting. We also hiked to take a look at a large arched bridge about one mile from our location. Presently all 8th grade math classes are designing prospective bridges. During the week of September 14th, students will build scale models of their designs. Then the class will be challenged to select one design to build at our site. Bridge plans and models will be on display at school for all to view.
