Happy Thanksgiving!
5th Grade Trip to Jamestown
The 5th graders and their adventurous mothers had a lovely time in Jamestown. The girls spent the first day on tour at the museum and visited the original site of the fort, where they had a chance to watch the excavation of a well created under John Smith. Our tour guide was impressed by our students’ questions. The fifth grade ended their exciting first day at the water park in Great Wolf Lodge. We also saw many wonderful animals in the life exhibits at the Virginia Living Museum in Newport News, where we learned about prehistoric sharks and native wildlife, before finally heading back home.

8th Grade “Fashion” Show
This week the eighth grade gave a fashion show. They studied different textiles in science class and created gorgeous outfits from materials such as duct tape and magazines. The eighth graders worked very hard on their projects and were glad to show them to the school. If you weren’t lucky enough to be at the show, you can watch the movie on the Village School website!

Science Extravaganza!
At Village School, we are dedicated to building strong, independent-minded young women. One of the ways we do this is by having an engaging science program. The girls are exposed to a wide range of disciplines in a safe and fun environment. Below are five videos of scenes from science class.
8th Grade–Chemistry Demonstrations, Part III
The eighth grade students have been giving chemical demonstrations. Each student performs and explains the “how and why” of a chemical reaction for the class.
7th Grade–Watersheds
Let it Rain! The 7th grade tested their homemade wetlands to see how they handled one liter of “rainwater.” Each model was judged for water absorption and the clarity of the run-off.

6th Grade–How the Earth is like an Egg, or Not
The 6th grade compared the parts of hard boiled goose eggs to layers of the Earth.

5th Grade–Squid Dissection
The 5th grade dissected squid and removed their eye lenses and pen. Squid are cephalopods (”head foot”) from the phylum Mollusca. They are shell-less mollusks with soft bodies, large heads, and divided feet called tentacles. Squid often use a spray of ink to escape their predators.

5th Grade–Arthropod Creations
The 5th grade made anatomically correct imaginary insects, arachnids, and crustaceans. Each creation was given a scientific name using binomial nomenclature.

Running the Mile
The girls run a mile each week in P.E., but every Fall and and Spring they run an official timed mile at the Charlottesville High School Track. You go, girls!
