8th Grade Energy Demonstrations

The 8th graders used simple demonstrations to show that energy forms are either potential or kinetic. Potential energy comes in forms that are stored, including—chemical, gravitational, mechanical, and nuclear. Kinetic energy forms are doing work and produce electricity, heat, light, motion, and sound.

Village School Basketball

Village School Basketball

As part of Piedmont YMCA, Village School sponsored five basketball teams–one from each grade with the 7th graders having two teams. The teams were generously coached by Village School dads, and the girls had a fun season of learning new skills and, most importantly, teamwork.

2010 Knitting Olympics

Over the past week and the next week, Village School is hosting its very own Knitting Olympics along with a canned food drive. The students worked with their advisory groups to create a fictional country, flag, and anthem, and they are competing against each other to see which team can knit the most scarves. The scarves will be given to patients at the University of Virginia Cancer Center. For the canned food drive, our goal is to donate one ton of non-perishable food items for the Emergency Food Bank.

Owl Pellet Dissection

Owls swallow their food whole, bones and all. The gizzard traps and separates indigestible and digestible food items. The indigestible parts, such as bones, teeth and nails, are formed into a pellet. The soft outer layer of the pellet is composed of fur or feathers, while the sharp bones are in the middle of the pellet. The owl coughs up and releases the pellet.

Parachute Launches

The 6th grade is studying astronomy. As part of our discussion of rockets, the students designed and built parachutes to launch with a stomp rocket. The launch site was at McGuffey Park, and we were joined by a local preschool. Parachutes were judged by how long they stayed in the air.

8th Grade Drama Performance

8th Grade Drama Performance

The 8th grade performed “The Little Prince.” The two main roles were split between three girls each. The staging was very creative and the girls did a great job. Thanks go to our theater teacher, Cynthia Leal, for leading both our 7th grade and 8th grade girls on their terrific plays.
