8th Grade Bridge Project Completed!

At long last, the 8th grade’s bridge is completed! We worked two weekends in a row, first to prefabricate the many components of our design and then to assemble them on the Rivanna Trail. The girls got a lot of practice with drills and other hand tools, post hole diggers and shovels, precise measurement, drawing lines squarely across a board, and (especially) with nailing. On installation day, we had absolutely perfect weather and a huge turnout of moms, dads, students, and canines (well one HUGE canine). Work began in the early morning and was completed by lunch time. Many, many thanks are due–to each parent who lent a hand with construction or drove their daughter out to the barn or to the trail in the midst of a busy weekend. And, in particular, thank you to the 8th grade class, who can sit back and relish a job done well and joyously! Many hands make light work.

Speeding Around the Sun

The 6th grade science class explored the relationship between the length of time it takes a planet to go around the sun and its distance from the sun.

Pi Day: 3.14

Pi Day--3.14, 2010

In celebration of Pi Day (March 14), the girls learned about the history of pi, read pi stories, sang pi music, experimented with different ways of calculating pi, made pi jewelry, and completed pi puzzles. The highlight of the day was the Pi Recitation Contest where the winner memorized and recited 62 digits of pi! The activities ended with the ceremonial eating of pie.

“Pi” Poetry

What Is Pi? by Molly Bocock

What is Pi?
Please,
tell me what it is.
Is it the stuff that tastes sweet and sticks to you fingers?
Or is it a bunch of numbers that float around you head?
What is Pi?
Please,
tell me what it is.

Three Tired People by Rachel Birkholz

Three tired people
pointed at the mattress store
for they wanted to take a nap.
One said, “Let’s go inside.”
Five minutes later, they were asleep.
“Nein,” said the manager. “You can’t sleep here.”
Two weary eyes from all three looked at him.
Six feet trudged out of the store.
Five minutes later, they were back.

Spring by Claire Keeler
Chirping birds
sing
flowers blooming
green
warm weather and wind
the clouds disappear and sun takes over
spring time

Piku by Kellyn Kusyk

My stomach feels bad
And that is why I don’t want
To have any pie.

If Pi is so great
Then why do we have to bust
Brain cells to find it?

Why is Pi the best
Repeating decimal, huh?
Why not just make one?

Atom Models

The 5th graders built models of atoms using various types of candy to represent the sub-atomic particles. Paper templates were used to represent the nucleus and the different shells of electrons. The girls modeled various elements by placing the appropriate number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus and distributing the electrons in the shells.
